The Smart Card Alliance publishes reports and white papers to members and the general public to provide an industry resource for information on smart card markets and technology. Reports are available covering business and technology topics in all market segments: enterprise and government ID, financial/retail, healthcare and transportation.

The U.S. government has also published a number of documents that provide extensive information on smart card technology and applications.
The Federal CIO Council established the Information Security and Identity Management Committee, which oversees the government-wide activities related to cybersecurity and identity management. The Identity, Credential and Access Management (ICAM) Subcommittee has published a number of documents, including the Federal Identity, Credential, and Access Management (FICAM) Roadmap and Implementation Guidance. This document provides Federal agencies with architecture and implementation guidance .
FIPS 201, Personal Identity Verification (PIV) of Federal Employees and Contractors was developed by NIST in response to Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12, and published on February 25, 2005. Government Smart Card Handbook. The Government Smart Card Handbook was developed under the joint sponsorship of the General Services Administration Office of Governmentwide Policy and the Smart Card Interoperability Advisory Board (IAB) and was published in February 2004. It provides a comprehensive reference on smart cards, including an overview of smart card and related ID technologies. The Handbook is based on contributions of experts from government, industry and academia, including input and review by members of the Smart Card Alliance Leadership Council.
