Executive Director’s Letter

Dear members and friends of the Alliance,

It seems as if there are only two topics that people are interested in talking about these days–presidential politics and the national financial crisis. Since I have never been elected to a public office (although it seems that it doesn’t require as much intelligence as I once believed) nor have I ever heard of a “collateralized debt obligation,” I certainly am not qualified to handicap the upcoming election or solve the financial markets meltdown. However, as both a concerned citizen and a businessman, I can’t stick my head in the sand and ignore either issue.

Transit Payment Systems: Security Considerations

Transit agencies worldwide have implemented automatic fare collection (AFC) systems that use contactless smart card technology for transit-issued fare media. These systems are popular since they deliver fast, easy access to riders and reduced operating costs and improved efficiencies to transit operators.

This article explores typical system-level security mechanisms that are used to prevent, detect and react to fraud in public transportation fare collection systems that use transit-issued fare media, thus mitigating the risk of tampering at the card level.
