During September and December of 2006, Aberdeen Group examined the procedures, experiences and intentions of hundreds of retail enterprises in the Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa and Asia/Pacific regarding contactless payment systems.
This Aberdeen Group report summarizes the results of the research and provides guidance to retailers on recommended actions.
Report Summary
Contactless payment systems are approaching the ‘tipping point’ of adoption in retail. After numerous pilots and implementations in the last three years, the continued pressure to improve the customer shopping experience is prompting retailers to adopt this technology. Based on a survey conducted in September and December of 2006, Aberdeen Group research shows that 58% of all respondents across multiple retail classifications indicated that they plan to implement contactless payment solutions within the next 18–24 months. However, just as in the case of RFID technology, Aberdeen Group concludes that RF-based contactless payment technology will cross the ‘tipping point’ of adoption in retail only when enterprises start measuring and using contactless transactional data in their internal processes and systems to attain the real ‘ROI.’
