SCM Microsystems Delivers Smart Card Readers for Belgium's National e-ID Program
SCM Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SCMM; Prime Standard: SMY) today announced it has delivered smart card readers to international technology group Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) for use in Belgium's National e-ID program. Belgium is becoming the first European country to standardize the electronic identity card. By the end of 2009, every Belgian citizen will be required to own an electronic ID card. Cubic Awarded Contract for Smart Card System for Bus and Rail Transport in Modena, Italy
The Cubic Nordic branch of Cubic Transportation Systems Limited, a subsidiary of Cubic Corporation (AMEX:CUB), has received a 3,500,000 Euro (US$4.287 million) contract from Azienda Trasporti Collettivi e Mobilita (ATCM) S.p.A. in Modena, Italy, to build, install and maintain an advanced fare collection and revenue management system that will link bus and rail services to a common contactless smart card. JCB Develops Contactless Credit for MOPASS
JCB, a leading international payment brand, has developed contactless credit for MOPASS cards conforming to ISO/IEC14443 for Type B communications. The MOPASS card (MObile PASSport), created in cooperation with Hitachi Ltd., combines smart card microprocessor functions with the flash memory card format for use in PCs, mobile phones, PDAs and other information devices with a memory card slot. Giesecke & Devrient, a global provider of banknotes, secure documents, processing equipment and smart cards, has hired Gary Glickman as CEO of Giesecke & Devrient Cardtech, Inc., the Cards and Solutions subsidiary in the U.S. On October 1, Mr. Glickman assumed responsibility for the U.S. Cards and Solutions business unit, which includes contact and contactless smart cards, traditional magnetic stripe cards and card solutions for the government, enterprise, transit, health, payment and telecommunications market areas. Mr. Glickman is based out of G&D's North American Headquarters, located in the technology corridor of Northern Virginia. Commerce department award to help US Smart Card firms develop Latin American market
The U.S. Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration (ITA) awarded $288,000 to Smart Card Alliance (SCA). SCA plans to increase awareness in Latin American markets about the benefits of smart card technology. The ultimate aim is to connect potential business partners and facilitators. The project includes adding Latin American focus days to an annual conference in Miami, establishing an SCA Latin America chapter, linking U.S. smart card firms with government and Latin American business representatives, launching a new SCA Latin America conference, and establishing an exposition in Mexico.
