Smart Cards Can Protect Privacy, Strengthen Security as Underlying Technology for Driver’s Licenses Issued to Comply with the REAL ID Act

Princeton Junction, NJ, July 19, 2006 – State governments should strongly consider using smart card technology to comply with the requirements of the federal REAL ID Act, the Smart Card Alliance Identity Council states in a new position paper. MasterCard PayPass Increases Customer Loyalty and Moves Payments Away From Cash
PayPass Significantly Changes Consumer Use of Credit and Debit For Small Everyday Purchases

Approximately 10 Million PayPass Cards and Devices Issued To Consumers and Approximately 32,000 Merchant Locations Accepting PayPass Globally. MasterCard(R) PayPass(TM) users are showing a marked change in their behavior while making their small, everyday purchases, MasterCard Worldwide announced today. The results of internal MasterCard data, dating back to September 2005, coupled with performance data provided by a major PayPass issuer, showed that consumers are loyal to PayPass merchants, use their PayPass-enabled cards more often than traditional payment cards and are showing an overall preference for electronic forms of payment rather than cash. 10-year contract for intelligent devices to be embedded in the citizens’ e-passports:

Gemalto, a world leader in digital security, today announces it will provide the technology to be used in electronic passports for Slovenian citizens. Under the contract, Gemalto will supply the secure polycarbonate devices embedding its advanced secure electronic passport software technology to Cetis, Slovenia’s leader in security document printing.
