Dear members
and friends of the Alliance,
Wow, June is here
already! With so much happening in our Alliance organization
in order to bring you the next events and deliverables, the
calendar has become a blurred image. A dedicated team of leadership
council members from our Marketing Committee and July Conference
Committee as well as task force members, led by Cathy Medich,
have been putting in countless hours in order to provide the
smart card industry with first class results. I want to thank
all of the people involved for their dedication and commitment
to the Alliance.
First up on the
calendar is the next SmartTalk Teleconference on Thursday,
June 26th beginning at 1pm eastern. The topic of this teleconference
and accompanying presentation is "Privacy and Secure
ID Systems." Based conceptually on the Privacy white
paper released in February 2003, this presentation will provide
new content on the subject and draw input from two new sources
from outside the Alliance. We are pleased to have Kent Blossom,
Director, IBM Safety & Security Services, providing a new
business perspective on ID systems and privacy; and Phil Becker,
Editor-in-Chief, Digital ID World, to provide insights into
the different privacy roles we assume and summarize issues
presented by the panel. Also participating in the panel will
be Jeff Katz, Atmel, and Gilles Lisimaque, Gemplus, who will
provide "inside the industry" expertise on secure systems
design and the role smart cards play. Registration is open
at the Alliance web site. The fee is $95 per line to participate,
and Alliance members were emailed complimentary registration
codes for their organizations.
The next event
on the calendar, and even bigger than last year, is the July
"Smart Cards in Government -2003" Conference
and Exposition. This 3-day conference will be held at the
Sheraton National Hotel, in Arlington, VA from July 15 -17.
This year's conference features top speakers from the government
and industry plus the addition of an exhibit hall for attendees
to see and touch the latest technologies impacting government-wide
secure ID systems. To cover the business and policy issues
as well as the technology trends in the government market,
we have split the second day of the conference into two concurrent
tracks.
The complete agenda
is on the web site and registration is available online. Early
registration discounts ends June 15th. Also, there
are a few exhibit spaces left for member or non-member organizations
wishing to be front and center to this market. Contact me
at 609-587-4208 if you are interested. As an added bonus,
the government Smart Card Project Manager's Group will hold
its semi-monthly meeting immediately preceding the start of
the Alliance's conference at the Sheraton, from 10am - 12pm
on July 15th. All
conference attendees are invited to attend and no registration
or fee is required. Also, while I am still on the topic of
Alliance conferences, mark your calendars for our annual conference,
"Smart Cards in Motion," October 14 -16 at the
Sawgrass Marriott Resort in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
The SmartTalk and
Alliance conferences should in no way overshadow the "real"
work that is being done by the Secure Personal ID and Terminal
and eTransaction Infrastructure Task Forces (updates are listed
in the right column). The white papers and presentations these
groups generate are gaining a world-wide reputation. More
than 5,000 downloads in recent months demonstrate how well
these papers are received and I continually receive feedback
from members, the media, and other industry groups that these
papers are the highest quality available. The upcoming projects
- Secure Physical Access Primer, HIPAA,
and Transit and Retail Convergence - will only
add to that reputation. As further evidence of how valued
the work of our task forces has been, a separate Leadership
Council-led work group will begin a new project to update
and improve the GSA's Government Smart Card Policy and
Administrative Guidelines Manual. Bearing Point, a
new Alliance member, will be serving as the prime contractor.
The Alliancešs demonstrated ability to produce vendor-neutral
smart card documents and broad industry representation was
considered extremely valuable for this project, both by Bearing
Point and by GSA.
So, my concluding
thoughts to everyone until next month's newsletter are:
1) Remember to sign up for these upcoming conferences and
teleconference events;
2) Keep up to date with other news bulletins, announcements,
press releases, and industry events by visiting the Alliance
web site often; and
3) find the time to get away from work, spend time with your
family and friends, barbeque with neighbors, and visit the
shore or mountains when you get the chance. The calendar is
going to continue to fly by and before you know it the summer
will be gone.

government organizations
"A single smart card can host multiple applications, helping
to reduce costs to government agencies and simplify the lives
of its employees and constituents," said Norman LeCouvie,
Director, Government Business Development for Sun Microsystems
of Canada. "The functionality inherent in Java Card technology
securely 'firewalls' all applications on the card from each
other to protect the integrity and privacy of each application."
