The Smart Card Alliance’s Vanderhoof says U.S. card issuers will likely rely on contactless mag-stripe technology to bridge a payments migration to EMV.

What might a move to the Europay, MasterCard, Visa standard look like in the United States? The migration could take different routes, says Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance, a not-for-profit, multi-industry smart-card association. The likely roadmap, he says, will build on existing near-field-communication, or contactless NFC, technology.

Randy Vanderhoof, Executive Director of the Smart Card Alliance addressed the Federal Interagency Advisory Board (IAB) at the April 1, 2010 meeting in Washington, DC. Randy’s address opened the first meeting of the new joint IAB/SCA format for these regular public meetings for disseminating information about federal smart card programs. Randy announced the launch of the Alliance’s new government-focused smart card training and certification program CSCIP/Government. This new training program is an extension of the existing CSCIP training and certification program with further emphasis on FIPS 201, PIV and PIV I, ICAM roadmap, PKI authentication, and use case involving physical and logical access security in the federal enterprise.

Smart Card Alliance and Secure ID Coalition held a briefing on May 19, 2009 at the National Press Club to discuss security and privacy concerns with health information. It featured a panel of experts who discussed how healthcare information privacy, identity management, access and authentication are critical elements in getting the nation’s healthcare infrastructure right. The panel described the current problems with healthcare identity management, security and privacy, and proposed solutions that include leveraging existing federal standards and technologies already used in other government identity programs.
