Innovative Payment Trial to Use Near Field Communications Technology
NEW YORK, NY, December 14, 2006–Citigroup, MasterCard Worldwide, Cingular Wireless and Nokia today announced a consumer technology trial of Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled mobile phones with MasterCard PayPass™ contactless payment capability in New York City. The goal of this trial is to evaluate the speed and convenience that “tap and go” payments made through mobile phones can provide to Citi credit cards and Cingular customers in the New York City area. The trial is expected to run three to six months.

LONDON, December 14, 2006–With adoption driven by some of the world’s largest card associations and banks, wireless operators and merchants, spending on contactless payments hardware and software will reach $870 million by 2011, up from just $260 million in 2006, amounting to a compound annual growth rate of 27%, according to a new study from ABI Research.

Passengers on public transport around London could soon be able to make quick, contact-free, cashless payments and travel around the Capital using one card.
London, December 13, 2006–Since its introduction in 2003, Transport for London (TfL) has seen Oyster smartcards become a huge success with more than six million in use on the transport network.

In its 30th year of service, 41 ski buses prepared for hi-tech future
Salt Lake City, December 7, 2006–After 30 years of providing ski bus service, The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) will begin accepting “contactless” debit and credit cards as payment for its service. At a Dec. 7 kick off, UTA and industry leaders will launch an electronic fare collection pilot making it quick and easy for passengers to ride ski buses. The pilot program allows customers to use contactless debit and credit cards as payment as well as resort-issued season ski passes, employee identification cards and Ski Salt Lake Superpasses during the 2006–07 ski season. UTA will be the first transit agency in the nation to implement the new contactless debit and credit card payments on transit buses.

New York, NY, November 28, 2006–JupiterResearch, a leading authority on the impact of the Internet and emerging consumer technologies on business, finds that the total value of transactions conducted using contactless payment tokens will grow from $500 million in 2006 to $79 billion in 2010. According to a new JupiterResearch report, “US Contactless Payments; Primed for Supply, But Industry Must Coordinate to Reach Non-Users,” growth will be fierce over the next five years, even though only 12 percent of US online consumers have tried contactless payments to date.
